Grade Inflation

Curriculum Changes

  • Edu-tainment
Many authors complain that there is more spoon feeding of students, more template grading -- told what they need to know in such detail that originality / creativity / effort no longer required for top marks
(On the other hand, some suggestion that this complaint is based on misunderstanding of rubric-based, criterion-referenced grading.)
  • Student affect
Complaint that primacy given to self-esteem of students has undermined standards
  • Graduate programs
Graduate programs use B as average grade; in my experience, many of our undergraduates are more intellectually prepared than some of our graduate students, though one has to recognize that graduate students are usually only part-time, already have the job (so have less economic motivation), and so on.
